The Oyo State Government has intensified efforts to position farmers, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and exporters in the State to take advantage of opportunities in the non-oil export sector.

The Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, stated this on Thursday at a one-day workshop and sensitisation programme for farmers, MSMEs and exporters on non-oil exportable products in Oyo State.

The programme, organised by the Ministry in collaboration with the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Oyo Smart Office, Ibadan, was held at the Conference Room of the Ministry, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Professor Adelabu, while welcoming participants, said the programme was coming at a crucial time when Nigeria was increasingly looking beyond crude oil for foreign exchange earnings and economic growth.

He said Oyo State was strategically positioned to contribute significantly to the diversification of the nation’s economy, given its agricultural resources, vibrant trading community, growing MSME sector and opportunities in agro-processing and other non-oil export activities.

The Commissioner, however, stressed that having products alone was not sufficient, noting that businesses seeking to enter the international market must understand quality standards, certification, packaging, labelling, export procedures, documentation, logistics, pricing and market requirements.

He said the State Government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, expand and participate meaningfully in domestic, regional and international trade.

According to him, the administration of the Executive Governor of Oyo State would continue to explore opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) and other international trade initiatives to improve market access for businesses in the State.

Professor Adelabu urged farmers and MSMEs to move beyond producing for the local market and position themselves as suppliers to markets across Africa and beyond.

He emphasised the need to move from production to value addition, value addition to standardisation, and standardisation to export competitiveness, while encouraging participants to share their challenges and make the best use of the knowledge provided during the workshop.

He assured that the Ministry would continue to collaborate with NEPC and other relevant institutions to facilitate trade, promote entrepreneurship, support MSMEs and encourage export-oriented production in Oyo State.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator and Deputy Director, Nigeria Export Promotion Council, Oyo Smart Office, Ibadan, Mr. Ralph Ogbenyi, who was represented by Mr. Opaleye Oluwatosin, said NEPC remained committed to supporting businesses to understand and take advantage of opportunities in the non-oil export sector.

He encouraged participants to improve the quality, packaging, certification and documentation of their products in order to meet the requirements of international markets.

Mr. Richmond Ogigai, Chief Executive Officer, Wallx Africa Limited, focused on digital transformation and urged business owners to maximise the potential of their smartphones and establish a strong digital presence through WhatsApp, Google Maps, social media and websites.

The facilitator identified digital visibility, purposeful content, digitised business operations and proper transaction records as essential pillars for building credible and scalable businesses.

Business owners were also advised to separate their personal and business accounts and maintain proper records, as transaction data could strengthen their business credibility and improve their chances of accessing finance.

Wallx Africa announced plans to provide 30 annual subscriptions to businesses that demonstrate readiness to embrace digital transformation. It also disclosed plans to connect credible businesses with financial institutions and develop a financing initiative in collaboration with the Ministry. Seventy per cent of the subscriptions are to be allocated to women entrepreneurs and 30 per cent to men.

Mr. Imhanbor Martins and Mr. Kayode Olugbemide, representatives of Fountana-Mart Associates Nigeria Limited, sensitised participants on the proposed Oyo State-Ghana Trade Summit, designed to expose businesses in the State to cross-border trade, digital commerce, product exhibition, business matching and networking opportunities in Ghana and the wider West African market.

The proposed initiative is expected to provide participants with practical knowledge of digital branding, e-commerce, cross-border payments, logistics, Ghana’s trade environment and investment opportunities, while creating avenues to connect with potential buyers, distributors and business partners.

The programme also highlighted the importance of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS) in facilitating eligible products moving across West African markets and encouraged prospective exporters to understand the relevant certification and documentation requirements.

Messrs. Otunba Kunle Adeyemo Farms delivered a practical session on viable agricultural products with export potential, including cocoa, cashew and coffee.

The facilitator also demonstrated farming practices, including irrigation methods and their benefits for improved agricultural productivity, while participants were introduced to selected cashew varieties, including Brazilian Jumbo and Ogbomoso varieties. Vegetable seedlings were also brought for practical demonstration.

A major highlight of the workshop was the hands-on training by Mrs. Temitope Debbie, CEO, Emmatee’s Global Limited, who demonstrated a practical session on cosmetics production, and Miss Bolanle Adeusi, CEO, ABS Sparkle Limited, on toiletries production, which exposed participants to practical approaches to developing locally sourced products for wider markets.

The workshop provided participants with practical knowledge on value addition, digital transformation, agricultural production and export opportunities, reinforcing the State Government’s commitment to strengthening MSMEs, creating jobs and positioning Oyo State businesses for greater participation in regional and international trade.

Oyo MITC&I Management, Staff Celebrate Commissioner Adelabu at Birthday Prayer Session, Laud His Transformative Leadership

The management and staff of the Oyo State Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry have celebrated the Honourable Commissioner, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, on his birthday, describing him as a committed and hardworking leader whose vision and dedication are bringing positive transformation to the Ministry.

The celebration, which took place at the Commissioner’s office, brought together members of the Ministry’s management team, senior officials and other members of staff for a special prayer session to mark the occasion and seek divine blessings for the Commissioner in his new year.

The team was led by the Director of Trade and Coordinating Director, Mrs. Modupe Adesina, who led members of the management and staff to the Commissioner’s office to celebrate him and offer prayers for his continued success and wellbeing.

The occasion was marked by prayers in both Islamic and Christian traditions, reflecting the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence within the Ministry.

Leading the Islamic prayer, the Director of Cooperatives, Mr. Idowu Olawoyin, thanked Almighty Allah for the life of Professor Adelabu and prayed for continued divine guidance, wisdom, good health, protection and strength for the Commissioner.

He also prayed that Allah would continue to guide Professor Adelabu in the discharge of his responsibilities and grant him the wisdom and understanding required to achieve his vision for the Ministry and contribute meaningfully to the development of Oyo State.

In the Christian prayer, the Assistant Director of Industry, Mr. Jide Williams, prayed for God’s continued protection, favour, wisdom and grace upon the Commissioner.

He prayed that God would strengthen Professor Adelabu, bless his new age and grant him the capacity to accomplish his aspirations, while asking for continued peace, progress and success for the Ministry and Oyo State.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Industry and Cooperatives, Honourable Adeyemo Emmanuel Adedokun, was also present at the prayer session, alongside the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. Obatade Monilade; Director of Finance and Accounts, Mrs. Rhoda Adeoye; Internal Auditor, Mr. Olawuyi Olatunji; and other members of staff.

Speaking on behalf of the management and staff, Mrs. Modupe Adesina congratulated the Commissioner on his birthday and appreciated his commitment to the growth and development of the Ministry.

She noted that Professor Adelabu had demonstrated a strong commitment to his responsibilities, describing him as a leader who is hardworking, intelligent, approachable and passionate about making the Ministry better.

The staff also acknowledged the various positive changes recorded in the Ministry under the leadership of Professor Adelabu, particularly his determination to improve the effectiveness of the Ministry and strengthen its contribution to investment, trade, cooperatives and industrial development in the State.

They commended his willingness to embrace ideas capable of advancing the Ministry and his determination to ensure that the various directorates and departments operate effectively towards achieving the broader development agenda of the Oyo State Government.

The celebration therefore provided more than an opportunity to mark the Commissioner’s birthday; it was also a demonstration of the goodwill and appreciation of the management and staff for his leadership, commitment and efforts towards repositioning the Ministry.

The prayer session ended with warm birthday wishes and goodwill messages from members of staff, who prayed for Professor Adelabu to enjoy many more years in good health, wisdom, peace and fulfilment.

They further prayed that his new age would usher in greater accomplishments, renewed strength and divine favour as he continues to contribute to the development of the Ministry and the socio-economic advancement of Oyo State.

The Oyo State Government has commenced a data capture and identity card registration exercise for traders, artisans, cooperative members and industrialists across the state’s 33 local government areas, with each beneficiary expected to pay ₦1,000 for the identification card.

The Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Prof. Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ engagement organised by the ministry in Ibadan.

He said the exercise was designed to create a credible database for economic planning and improve access to government interventions.

Adelabu said “the Oyo State government could not effectively plan for traders, artisans, cooperatives and industrialists without reliable information on their number and distribution.”

He disclosed that Global Sight Services Limited had been engaged to coordinate the data capture and production of the identity cards.

Also speaking the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Olajide Mamud Okesade, said the identity card would contain modern security and verification features, including a QR code and chip.

He added that “the cards were expected to be ready within one month of registration, while the consultant would visit markets, associations and business clusters across the state.”

The consultant, Dayo Bello, said the registration would be linked to verified information, including National Identification Numbers and Bank Verification Numbers, to reduce duplication, fraudulent claims and inaccurate records.

He said the cards would be produced in ATM-card format and linked to beneficiaries’ verified bank accounts, while the ₦1,000 payment would be made into the beneficiary’s account.

Meanwhile, the state government has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting EXPOYO 2026, with the Commissioner disclosing that a fresh memorandum was being prepared for Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

The development followed administrative processes that delayed the earlier proposed date for the trade fair.

The Vice President of the Oyo State Council of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Alhaji Abiola Alli, had appealed for the early approval of EXPOYO 2026, proposed for the last week of October.

He said early confirmation of the date would enable exhibitors, investors and development partners to make adequate preparations, while the Commissioner urged OYCCIMA to strengthen its role in investment promotion, economic advocacy and generation of sector-specific data to support government planning

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the successful hosting of EXPOYO 2026, as part of its broader agenda to stimulate investment, promote industrialisation and strengthen the State’s economy through strategic public-private sector partnerships.

The Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, gave the assurance while receiving the leadership of the Oyo State Council of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OYCCIMA), led by its President, Esv. Niran Adewoyin, alongside the Vice President, Alhaji Abiola Alli, and other executive members of the Chamber during a courtesy visit to his office in Ibadan.

Professor Adelabu said the Ministry was fully aware of the importance of EXPOYO to the economic aspirations of the State, explaining that the delay in fixing a definite date was due to administrative processes that affected the earlier proposal.

He disclosed that the Ministry had commenced the process of preparing a fresh memorandum for the approval of Governor Seyi Makinde through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), expressing confidence that the necessary approval would be secured to enable adequate planning for the event.

The Commissioner stressed that while EXPOYO remains a flagship economic event, OYCCIMA’s responsibility extends beyond organising trade fairs. According to him, the Chamber should serve as the voice of the State’s economy by generating reliable sectoral data, championing policy advocacy, attracting investments and promoting innovation capable of driving sustainable economic growth.

He urged the Chamber to strengthen its collaboration with the Ministry, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, international chambers of commerce and development finance institutions such as the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), noting that such partnerships would unlock greater opportunities for businesses and position Oyo State as a preferred investment destination.

Professor Adelabu further emphasised that Government exists to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, adding that effective teamwork between the Ministry and OYCCIMA would accelerate industrial development, enhance value addition across key sectors and improve the State’s contribution to the national economy.

He also challenged the Chamber to provide periodic economic reports, sector-by-sector statistics and investment data that would support Government planning and evidence-based policy formulation, stressing that “data drives decision-making and remains critical to economic transformation.”

Earlier, the Vice President of OYCCIMA, Alhaji Abiola Alli, appealed to the State Government to facilitate the early approval of EXPOYO 2026, proposed for the last week of October 2026.

He noted that timely confirmation of the date would sustain the confidence of exhibitors, investors and development partners, while enabling both the Chamber and the State Government to make adequate preparations for a successful trade fair.

Alhaji Alli described EXPOYO as one of the Chamber’s flagship programmes, whose benefits extend beyond the business community to the State Government through investment promotion, enterprise development, market expansion and increased economic activities.

He recalled that the maiden edition of EXPOYO enjoyed the support of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, with the Deputy Governor representing the Governor at the event, a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to promoting commerce, trade and industrial development in Oyo State.

The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their resolve to work more closely towards delivering a bigger and more impactful EXPOYO 2026, while strengthening institutional collaboration aimed at attracting investments, creating jobs and advancing Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision of a sustainable and prosperous economy for Oyo State.

The Oyo State Government has joined the Federal Government and other stakeholders in advancing the digital transformation and reform of Nigeria’s cooperative sector, with the State represented at the National Technical Workshop on Cooperative Sector Digitalization and the MoU Signing Ceremony in Abuja.

The two-day workshop, holding on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Ladi Kwali Acacia Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja, is being organised under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme (RH-CRRP 2025–2030).

Oyo State’s delegation is led by the Director of Cooperatives in the Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Mr. Idowu Olawoyin, who is representing the Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu.

The workshop is focused on the implementation of the National Cooperative Smart Registry (NCSR), Cooperative Verification Number (CVN) and Cooperative Member Identification Number (CoopID), aimed at establishing a more credible, transparent and digitally enabled cooperative ecosystem across Nigeria.

Declaring the workshop open, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security and Supervising Minister of Cooperative Affairs, Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the digitalisation of the cooperative sector was central to the Federal Government’s efforts to reposition cooperatives as major instruments for economic development, food security, financial inclusion, enterprise development and wealth creation.

Abdullahi said the Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme was designed to transform cooperatives from predominantly analogue structures into modern, digitally enabled, transparent, productive and investment-ready institutions.

He explained that the National Cooperative Digital Architecture would provide the foundation for reliable data and improved identification within the cooperative sector through the National Cooperative Smart Registry, Cooperative Verification Number and Cooperative Member Identification Number.

According to the Minister, credible and verifiable data would enable the Government to better understand the cooperative landscape, strengthen regulation, improve planning and facilitate cooperatives’ access to finance, markets and Government interventions.

He stressed that the digitalisation initiative was not merely about technology, but about building a stronger institutional foundation for cooperatives to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Abdullahi noted that cooperatives had historically played significant roles in Nigeria’s agricultural and economic development, stressing that the Federal Government was determined to restore and strengthen that role under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its commitment to repositioning the cooperative sector as a strategic instrument for economic growth, food security, job creation, financial inclusion and poverty reduction, noting that the reform programme reflected the administration’s determination to build a more productive, inclusive and digitally driven economy.

He further emphasised the importance of collaboration among the Federal Government, State Governments, cooperative federations, cooperative societies, development partners, financial institutions and other stakeholders in ensuring the success and sustainability of the reform programme.

The Minister also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving access to affordable finance for cooperatives, including the proposed Cooperative Bank of Nigeria, while strengthening governance, accountability, capacity development and value-chain participation within the sector.

He urged stakeholders to embrace the digital transformation programme and work collectively to ensure that the reform produces measurable benefits for cooperative members, farmers, entrepreneurs, women, youths and other Nigerians who depend on cooperative institutions for economic empowerment.

The Federal Government had earlier inaugurated a National Steering Committee for the RH-CRRP to coordinate implementation of the programme across the Country. The committee is also expected to facilitate collaboration between Federal and State Governments and support the establishment of State Cooperative Implementation Committees.

For Oyo State, participation in the workshop provides an opportunity to strengthen its cooperation with the Federal Government on cooperative development and to align the State’s cooperative data and systems with the emerging national digital framework.

The development is particularly significant as the Oyo State Government continues to pursue initiatives aimed at improving data management, strengthening economic planning and enhancing access to government support for cooperatives and other organised economic groups across the State.

The development also aligns with the proactive position of the Oyo State Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, who has consistently advocated for stronger institutional systems, improved data management and modern approaches to strengthening the Department of Cooperatives. His emphasis on accurate data, effective coordination and improved service delivery is particularly relevant to the emerging national cooperative digitalisation framework, which seeks to provide credible and verifiable information on cooperative societies and their members.

The Commissioner’s position reflects Oyo State Government’s readiness to embrace reforms capable of making cooperative societies more organised, accessible to Government interventions and better positioned to contribute to inclusive economic development. The State’s participation in the Abuja workshop therefore underscores its commitment to aligning its cooperative development efforts with emerging national standards and opportunities.

Through its participation, the Oyo State Government is expected to gain further insight into the technical requirements and implementation framework for the NCSR, CVN and CoopID, while exploring opportunities for effective integration of the State’s cooperative records into the national system.

The Oyo State Government has pledged its support and partnership with the Women Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (WCCIMA), South-West, to strengthen women-owned enterprises and accelerate economic development through finance, technology and innovation.

The Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, made the commitment on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while inaugurating the WCCIMA South-West Executive at the ODU’ACCIMA Hall, Cocoa House, Dugbe, Ibadan.

The inauguration, themed “Driving Women’s Enterprise Through Finance, Technology and Innovation,” saw Deaconess Titilayo Cynthia Saka inaugurated as the South-West Coordinator, alongside the unveiling of the new executive team.

WCCIMA South-West covers the six South-West States of Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti and Lagos, with a mandate to strengthen women’s participation in commerce, industry, agriculture and enterprise development across the region.

Representing the Oyo State Government, Professor Adelabu congratulated Deaconess Cynthia Saka and the newly inaugurated executives, describing finance, technology and innovation as the three critical engines capable of transforming women-owned businesses and strengthening the economy.

He noted that every individual had the potential to become an entrepreneur, stressing that Nigerians possessed talents and skills capable of producing goods and services that could compete favourably with imported products.

The Commissioner urged women entrepreneurs to embrace innovation, technology, branding and improved packaging, noting that these were essential for transforming businesses, increasing competitiveness and accessing wider local and international markets.

According to him, the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope initiative and its economic growth agenda require effective collaboration with State Governments and stakeholders, stressing that Oyo State was ready to work with WCCIMA to ensure that women entrepreneurs in the South-West were not left behind.

He said: “I think we have a lot of things to do together. On behalf of the Oyo State Government, there should be strong synergy. The Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment does not have operational fields; they rely on the 36 States. So, whoever refuses to key into the programme will be left out.”

Professor Adelabu further emphasised the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to Nigeria’s economic development, urging WCCIMA to help more women move beyond survival businesses to sustainable and growth-oriented enterprises.

He assured the organisation that the Oyo State Government was willing to collaborate with it beyond the inauguration, noting that the three pillars of finance, technology and innovation could provide practical solutions to challenges confronting women-owned businesses.

Speaking at the event, the President of ODU’ACCIMA, Alhaji Wasiu Olaleye, described the inauguration as more than the assumption of office by an individual, but the beginning of a platform for action, collaboration and economic transformation for women entrepreneurs across the South-West.

He identified access to affordable finance, appropriate technology and innovation as major factors affecting the growth of women-owned businesses.

Olaleye called for stronger partnerships among Government agencies, financial institutions, investors, development partners and the private sector to provide women entrepreneurs with finance, skills, technology, markets and mentorship.

The Guest Speaker, Richmond Ogigai, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of WALLX Africa, provided insights into how technology and digital solutions could transform women-owned businesses.

Ogigai highlighted the importance of technology in improving business operations, strengthening brands, reaching wider markets and competing effectively in the digital economy. He also presented opportunities for WCCIMA members to leverage technology-driven solutions, networking and capacity-building initiatives.

He noted that WALLX Africa’s experience in working with business communities and enterprise groups could provide a useful platform for WCCIMA members to access digital tools, business support, connections and other technology-enabled opportunities that could enhance productivity and growth.

Also speaking, Dr. Ifenaike Sakirat Aderonke, a university lecturer in the Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education, Lagos State University (LASU), addressed participants on women, enterprise and finance. She highlighted the significant role women play in entrepreneurship and economic development, while encouraging them to strengthen their financial knowledge in areas such as business planning, savings, investment, budgeting and prudent management of business resources.

She stressed that financial knowledge would enable women entrepreneurs to make informed decisions, manage available resources effectively and build businesses capable of attracting and sustaining investment.

Dr. Folasade Olukemi Oke, in her presentation on innovation, encouraged women entrepreneurs to embrace new ideas, improve their products and services and adopt innovative approaches to business development.

She noted that continuous innovation was necessary for businesses to remain relevant, competitive and sustainable in a rapidly changing economic environment.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the formal inauguration of the WCCIMA South-West executives, during which Professor Adelabu adorned the executives with their official collars.

In a reciprocal gesture, Deaconess Cynthia Saka presented Professor Adelabu with a WCCIMA Patron’s badge and a gift on behalf of the organisation in appreciation of his support and presence at the ceremony.

The event brought together leaders and members of the organised private sector, representatives of Chambers of Commerce, women entrepreneurs, development partners and other stakeholders.

Mr. Okesade noted that the words inscribed on the banner aptly reflected who Professor Adelabu is, considering the relatively short period he had spent in the Ministry and the leadership qualities he had demonstrated.

He explained that the themes of innovation, collaboration and transformative economic development contained in the message were a fitting reflection of the Commissioner’s approach to leadership and his engagement with the Ministry.

The Permanent Secretary assured the Commissioner of the continued cooperation, dedication and professional support of the management and staff in the discharge of the Ministry’s responsibilities.

He noted that the Ministry remained committed to advancing the economic development agenda of the Oyo State Government through effective policies, investment promotion, trade development, cooperative growth and industrial advancement.

The occasion underscored the shared commitment of the political and administrative leadership of the Ministry to strengthening collaboration and delivering on the economic development priorities of the Oyo State Government.

The Oyo State Government has monitored the 11th referendum among the 12 recognised traders’ clusters in the State, with members of the Ibadan Joint Traders Association unanimously electing Alhaji Dauda Abiodun Oladepo to represent the association on the Market Leaders’ Council for a two-year tenure.

The referendum, held in Ibadan, was monitored by officials of the Oyo State Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, who represented the Honourable Commissioner, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olajide Mamud Okesade.

Leading the Ministry’s delegation, the Deputy Director of Trade, Mr. Olayinka Raimi, said the referendum was part of the State Government’s ongoing process for the reinstatement and activation of the Market Leaders’ Council through a transparent, inclusive and democratic process.

Raimi explained that the exercise was designed to enable recognised traders’ clusters and associations to democratically select representatives who would constitute the Market Leaders’ Council, thereby providing a structured platform for effective engagement between the Government and the organised trading community.

He noted that the Ministry’s participation in the referendum was to ensure that the exercise was conducted in accordance with the stipulated guidelines, while promoting fairness, inclusiveness and credibility in the emergence of representatives.

Also speaking, the Assistant Director of Trade, Mr. Olawale Olanrewaju, explained that the Ministry agreed to attend the referendum following a letter from the association informing the Government that its members had resolved their differences and had become united.

Olanrewaju stated that the purpose of the referendum was to provide members with the opportunity to democratically choose their representative on the Market Leaders’ Council, adding that the Government delegates presence is to supervised the election which produced the representative of the association.

He disclosed that the Ibadan Joint Traders Association became the 11th association among the 12 recognised traders’ clusters to conduct its referendum, while the remaining association was yet to resolve its internal differences and, consequently, had not been able to conduct its referendum or invite the Government to monitor the exercise.

The Assistant Director stressed the importance of unity among traders, noting that the Market Leaders’ Council remained a significant platform through which the Government could effectively engage the trading community and ensure that Government programmes, opportunities and other benefits intended for traders reached them through a united and organised structure.

He urged the members to sustain the unity achieved and work together towards the growth of their businesses and the development of the State’s commercial sector.

In his remarks, Alhaji Dauda Abiodun Oladepo appreciated the Oyo State Government for its intervention and for sending officials of the Ministry to monitor the referendum. He also thanked members of the association for their participation and peaceful conduct throughout the exercise.

Oladepo, who acknowledged the presence of Alhaja Iswat Abiola Ameringun, also known as Chief Mrs. Oyinlola Iswat Abiola Ameringun, a prominent market leader and member of the association, said the association had resolved that there would no longer be a system of life presidency in its leadership structure.

He explained that henceforth, whoever was elected or installed as president of the association would serve for a defined tenure and vacate the office at the expiration of the approved term, rather than operating the former system of life presidency.

He further appealed to the Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry to continue its intervention towards resolving the outstanding differences among members, noting that the unity achieved so far was important for the progress of the association and the effective participation of its members in Government programmes.

The referendum, which represents the 11th exercise conducted among the 12 recognised traders’ clusters in Oyo State, culminated in the unanimous selection of Alhaji Dauda Abiodun Oladepo by members drawn from 11 Local Government Areas across Ibadan to represent the association on the Market Leaders’ Council for a period of two years.

The development marks another significant step towards the reconstitution of the Market Leaders’ Council and the strengthening of collaboration between the Oyo State Government and the organised trading community for sustainable commercial growth and economic development across the State.

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening cooperative societies as critical drivers of economic development, financial inclusion, job creation and poverty reduction, while calling for a stronger data-driven partnership to enhance the sector’s contribution to the economy.

The Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, gave the assurance while representing the Oyo State Government at the 2026 Standard Administrative Meetings and Component Annual General Meetings (AGMs) of the Odua Cooperative Conglomerate (OCC) held at its Central Headquarters, Obisesan Hall, Dugbe, Ibadan.

The AGM brought together cooperative leaders and delegates from across the South-West to deliberate on statutory matters, including the review of consolidated financial performance, governance issues, board transitions, socio-economic interventions and strategies for strengthening the cooperative movement in the region.

Professor Adelabu said Governor ‘Seyi Makinde’s administration accords high priority to cooperative development, noting that the Ministry of Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry reflects the Government’s recognition of the sector as a key pillar of sustainable economic growth.

He described cooperative societies as traditional financial intermediaries that mobilise savings, provide access to credit, promote entrepreneurship, create employment, support food security, enhance financial inclusion, facilitate housing development and contribute significantly to wealth creation and poverty reduction.

The Commissioner observed that Government alone cannot provide employment for all graduates, stressing that vibrant cooperative societies remain indispensable in empowering citizens to establish businesses and contribute meaningfully to the State’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking on the request for Government support, Professor Adelabu said future interventions must be driven by reliable statistics. He therefore urged the leadership of the cooperative movement to provide comprehensive data on the sector’s economic contributions across the South-West, noting that such evidence would strengthen policy decisions, facilitate engagement with Governor Seyi Makinde and other Governors, and attract greater Government support.

He reiterated that the present administration remains committed to evidence-based governance and assured the gathering of the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with cooperative stakeholders through sustained engagement and strategic partnerships to advance the sector.

The Commissioner also disclosed that he recently attended the National Council on Industry, Trade and Investment meeting in Enugu, where he sought information on the participation of Oyo State cooperative societies, stressing the need for stronger representation at national policy engagements.

Earlier, the President of the Odua Cooperative Conglomerate, Elder Felix Bamidele Ajibode, appealed to the Oyo State Government to provide greater support for cooperative societies through funding and collaboration. He also sought the participation of Governor Seyi Makinde at the forthcoming World Cooperative Day celebration, expressing confidence in the administration’s continued support for the cooperative movement.

The AGM reviewed key statutory activities of the Conglomerate, including financial audits, governance matters, tenure issues and regional socio-economic programmes. The meeting was attended by cooperative leaders, delegates and representatives from Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti States, underscoring the Conglomerate’s role as the apex cooperative body promoting regional integration and economic development across the South-West.

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable transportation and clean energy solutions while emphasizing that every investment proposal must undergo comprehensive technical, commercial and legal evaluation before any partnership is considered.

The Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, stated this while receiving a delegation from Africa Vehicle Company (AVC), led by the President of the Electric Mobility Promoters Association of Nigeria (EMPAN)  Engr. Dapo Adesina  and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Vehicle Company, Chief Babatunde Chris Osadahun, at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Park Management System (PMS) for tricycle operators in Oyo State, led by their Chairman Comrade Esho Giwa,  traders, cooperators, representatives of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA); the Babaloja General of Oyo State, Alhaji Abass Yekini Oladapo; and other key stakeholders.

Professor Adelabu commended the concept of electric mobility as a clean, innovative and cost-effective alternative to conventional fuel-powered transportation, describing it as an initiative that aligns with global efforts to promote environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and economic development.

The Commissioner, however, stressed that the Oyo State Government would only support initiatives that demonstrate long-term value, affordability, accessibility and sustainability for the people of Oyo State. He explained that issues relating to product pricing, distribution channels, maintenance structure, charging infrastructure, after-sales support, availability of spare parts, corporate social responsibility, consumer protection and overall implementation strategy must be satisfactorily addressed before any partnership is formalised.

He noted that the Ministry would independently assess the proposal alongside similar products and investment models to ensure that any eventual collaboration offers the best value to the State and prospective beneficiaries.

Professor Adelabu further explained that the initiative has the potential to create economic opportunities for transport operators, cooperatives, entrepreneurs and other investors if properly structured. He added that the Ministry would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any investment model adopted is transparent, practical and beneficial to the people of Oyo State.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olajide Mamud Okesade, explained that the engagement was organised to enable the Ministry obtain a comprehensive understanding of the proposed electric mobility initiative before engaging prospective investors and stakeholders.

According to him, the Ministry is primarily interested in evaluating the durability, workability, maintenance requirements, implementation strategy and overall cost-effectiveness of the proposed electric tricycles under the prevailing Nigerian operating environment.

He said the Ministry would carefully examine the suitability of the vehicles for different road conditions across the State, battery lifespan, charging duration, replacement costs, charging infrastructure and the possibility of adapting the technology to local conditions where necessary.

Mr. Okesade added that the Ministry would also explore financing options, including cooperative-based ownership and flexible instalment payment arrangements that could make the tricycles more affordable for operators.

He assured the delegation that the Ministry would continue to engage relevant stakeholders while ensuring that every decision is guided by technical evidence, sustainability and the overall interest of the people of Oyo State.

Presenting the proposal, the President of the Electric Mobility Promoters Association of Nigeria (EMPAN)  Engr. Dapo Adesina and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Vehicle Company, Chief Babatunde Chris Osadahun, said the company’s electric tricycles are designed to provide a cleaner, more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuel-powered tricycles.

They disclosed that the tricycles can travel up to 100 kilometres on a single battery charge, significantly reducing daily operating costs when compared with petrol-powered alternatives.

According to them, the company intends to establish a comprehensive support ecosystem through local assembly of the vehicles, training of technicians and roadside mechanics, development of spare-parts distribution networks, and the deployment of charging stations as well as solar-powered battery swap stations to ensure seamless operations.

Chief Osadahun further explained that the initiative would encourage local content development, create employment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, strengthen technical capacity and contribute to Nigeria’s transition to cleaner, greener and more sustainable transportation.

The highlight of the engagement was the demonstration and test ride of the electric tricycle by the Honourable Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Professor Salihu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olajide Mamud Okesade. Also participating in the ride were the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Industry and Cooperatives, Honourable Adeyemo Emmanuel; the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Trade and Export Promotion, Honourable Kolawole Ojo; members of the Ministry’s management team; representatives of Africa Vehicle Company; the leadership of the Park Management System (PMS); traders, cooperators and other stakeholders, who witnessed the demonstration of the electric tricycle’s features and operational capabilities.

The initiative aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration’s commitment to attracting credible investments, promoting industrialisation, supporting innovation, encouraging clean energy solutions and fostering strategic partnerships that will drive economic growth, create employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of the people of Oyo State.
